Celebrity Blues 2 [Blues Hard with a Vengence]

Posted by Dan "The Man" | | Posted On May 29, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Being a celebrity can be tough; it can even give you the blues and here is the second part of our on going series Celebrity Blues. This time we continue with action stars but this one unlike Steven Seagal actually still has a career (Die Hard 4 rocked but get the unrated version), that's right Mr. Jippy Ki Yay himself, Bruce Willis.

Bruce Willis as you may well know has had a long (not really) career (attempt) at breaking into the music business, but it seems like he's better at breaking faces. There was The Return of Bruno which kind of was a 80s joke even though it had some great backing artists like Booker T. Jones and The Temptations. The album has a decisive R&B tone but is was ultimately unsuccessful as was it's sequel "If It Don't Kill You, It Just Makes You Stronger".

Bruce needed a new band and he found it in The Accelerators an 80's rock and roll group that took a hiatus and regroups as being Bruce Willis's backing band. Personal I like like their vibe and this is substancailly better than Mr. Seagal's offering. But don't take my word for it.

Article about Buddy Guy, who I will be seeing twice this year. Seriously he is perhaps my greatest influence and my interest in him boarders on obsession and I don't care.

Blues and Filmfest thing in Canada [Eh?]

Posted by Dan "The Man" | | Posted On May 22, 2008 at 10:17 PM

I got into the blues because of a movie and now for my few (and I mean few) Canadian readers there is a bluesfest that combines them both. And yes they played the Blues Brothers, and when it's over you can catch Taj Mahal. Why is there so many cool festivals not were I am? Oh wait there is one next week I forgot.

Mick Fleetwood starts new blues band [still feels shame from Fleetwood Mac]

Posted by Dan "The Man" | | Posted On May 20, 2008 at 4:29 PM

Well I had mentioned before in my blues roots series here that Fleetwood Mac was once a superb blues-rock band and it looks like ins a way it will return to it again with Mick Fleetwood starting his own blues band. I guess the shame of past thirty years are catching up with him. Sadly Peter Green will not be a part of the endevoer but with his medical record that is not surprising.

Well I say good luck to him and lets all try and forget the past thirty years of Fleetwood Mac.

Strat Week continues with Robert Cray

Posted by Dan "The Man" | | Posted On May 19, 2008 at 9:43 PM

Undoubtedly one of the best players to use the Strat. I've had the immense pleasure to catch him on stage twice; most recently at the Birchmere (write up here)His playing is just so unique: every note seems so deliberate and intense. He shows that the Strat can transcend above attitude and become art.

Enjoy

I'm back and better then ever and I've got some great ideas for the future of www.bluesforlife.com and I can't wait to get going.

Here is a shot of my new birthday present to myself a Squier Affinity Strat so in honor of it I will honor all Strats.

First off the most famous strat of all, Eric's Blackie. Here is a cool video about the behind the scenes of the Blackie replica project.

Well the next two weeks are finals week form me so I'm going to be taking a break from any major posting. I'll still post some quick things if I find any.

I've also started Eric Clapton's autobiography which is also put on hold thanks to finals so I guess I'll be back with more on that later.

Here is a video of Popa Chubby though. You can also pick up a free track of his at the Blind Pig Records website.

Early Morning Post [Blues at Sunrise]

Posted by Dan "The Man" | | Posted On at 12:31 AM

Hear is probably some of the best footage of McKinley Morganfield. I've read a lot of Muddy and listened to him but watching him is a completely different experience. He has such an awesome presence it's hard not to imagine him having a massive impact on the blues and popular music.

On a side not the guitar he is using is not his typical Telecaster but a Guild that he used for a couple of months thanks to a sponsorship. It's a Guild S-200 Thunderbird and if you're thinking like me that it might be a cool vintage guitar to have don't hold you breath; they didn't make that much of them and they weren't cool enough to be kept around so from my research they seem to be pretty rare and go for $4,000 and up to the right buyer. If you have one ignore the previous sentence and I'll take it off you hands for a couple of clams, just drop me and email.
