Gone for a Week [but I did get Skin Deep!]

Posted by Dan | | Posted On at 10:32 PM

Hey dudes and dudettes I'm going to be gone for a Week to the Florida panhandle where I will be sitting on either a beach or the pool for most of the time while my parents work on getting my grandparents into a home. Me and my sister have a pact that for sea food we're only going to eat oysters so that is cool too.

But the best part is that I was able to grab Buddy Guy's new album Skin Deep today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (yes I needed that many exclamation points) I'm saving to listen to it tomorrow while I drive through Georgia.

I also got James Hunter's new CD The Hard Way. I'm glad he is getting more success because he's phenomenal and I am a really big fan (so is my mom who saw the CD at Starbucks)

I'll have my laptop but I'm not sure if I'll have a chance to post anything but I'll see what I can do.

Catch you'll later.

Ongoing obsessive Buddy Guy Coverage [Yay!]

Posted by Dan | Labels: | Posted On Jul 22, 2008 at 8:27 PM

Here is some more on Buddy's new album coming out. Firstly here is the set list with links to steams. Personally I'm not thrilled with Robert Randolph being so prevalent as I really don't think he fits the blues scene. But the cool guest is Ouinn Sullivan on "Who's Gonna Fil Those Shoes" who is in fact a nine year old wiz kid who just might fill those shoes.

Everyone else on the album is awesome +points for Derek Trucks because I'm an Allman Brothers fan. He is also on the song "Skin Deep" which I head on the most recent Roadhouse and can confirm it is really great.

If I can't get the CD this week I'm packing a CD player for a trip next week and I'll buy it one the road.

The Set List

  1. Best Damn Fool
  2. Too Many Tears (feat. Trucks and Tedeschi)
  3. Lyin' Like a Dog
  4. Show Me The Money
  5. Everytime I Sing The Blues (feat. Eric Clapton)
  6. Out In The Woods (feat. Robert Randolph)
  7. Hammer and a Nail
  8. That's My Home (feat. Robert Randolph)
  9. Skin Deep (feat. Derek Trucks)
  10. Who's Gonna Fill Those Shoes (feat. Quinn Sullivan)
  11. Smell The Funk
  12. I Found Happiness

The Roadhouse 179

Posted by Dan | | Posted On Jul 19, 2008 at 10:03 PM

Here is the new Roadhouse for this week. I can't wait to listen to it on my drive to work on Monday through the speakers on my new car! Well not technically new it's a 98 Subaru Forester and I have technically had it for a month new but since it's a manual I've been keeping it pretty close to home while I've been learning the stick.

Most importantly it's got a great stereo and I can't wait for some new blues to break in my new bluesmobile (which is technically red)

It's the tiny instrument that most closely resembles the human voice in range, timbre and emotion. The harmonica takes center stage in the 179th Roadhouse, and it's an hour of hot blues harp. Watermelon Slim, Mississippi Heat, Big Dave McLean, Junior Wells, and Mannish Boys lead the way as the harp proves the backbone of [...]

Just a little bit of Soul [Al Green concert]

Posted by Dan | | Posted On Jul 17, 2008 at 5:06 PM

Oh man do I recommend catching Al Green live. It's not that it's a totally different experience than what you might have probably had before but it's taken to a new level of fun.

Forgive the analogy but it was like being in a congregation when the Rev. Al Green was on the stage. He was our preacher and our shepherd taking us back spiritually to the time when Soul and Motown was the sound of the day. Oh course the Rev. sang his own songs dispelling any doubt that time has taken a toll. The only sign that any thing was different that 1974 was that instead of women giving him flowers, he gave them rose. Seriously he had a whole mess of roses he handed out to the women of the first few roses. One he said demanded "I want a flower!" which he did.

To me though maybe the highlight of the show was when he sand some of the real oldies that he must of remembered hearing and singing when he was on his way up. Songs like "Wonderful World" by Sam Cooke, "I've Been Loving You to Long" and "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding (who he called "Big O" which I will from now on). Great songs by two people taken in the prime of their life, but played with a fondness that come from love and the knowledge that he holds the reins as their successor. Everyone of course sang along as well but for the perfect display of him leading us in song was when he started "Can't Help Myself" by The Four Tops. All he had to sing "Sugar-pie, Honey-bunch.." and we were and on the same page for the rest of the song.

I had a great time and would recommend that you catch Al Green whenever you can; I know I will.

Off to see Al Green.

Well he's not blues but you can't not like Al Green (double negative) Anyways I'm going to see him tonight at Wolftrap so I'll be back with a right up on what is certainly going to be an awesome show.

The Roadhouse 178

We top off the tank this week to provide the necessary fuel for the upcoming 7 days. But don't worry - it's not nearly as expensive as the gas pump. We're pumping Jimmy Burns, Carol Fran & Clarence Holliman, Junior Wells, Jolly Jumper & Big Moe, and Robin Rogers into the tank of the '57 Cadillac convertible of the blues. It's a 98 octane edition of The Roadhouse and another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

Morgan Freeman will open second blues club in Mississippi - USA Today

Posted by Dan | | Posted On Jul 10, 2008 at 10:32 PM

You know I've always liked Morgan Freeman but now I know he is cooler than I ever thought he was (lets forget about Wanted....so not cool) But was I was saying Morgan Freeman is ridiculously cool. But not just his movies but also his commitment to the blues, for which he is opening up his second blues club and unlike House of Blues is isn't a half hearted venture; this one actully plays blues music.

I for one will deffinatlly go what I get a change, though I have no foreseeable plans to go to Mississippi but but a roadtrip through the states hitting all the good blues spots like the Delta Blues Men museam sounds pretty cool..... humm........ maybe after college.

‘Space Cowboy' Steve Miller goes back to the blues

Posted by Dan | | Posted On Jul 5, 2008 at 8:57 PM

If you've been to a Steve Millar Band show in the recently (I have) than you would have noticed that after he plays those ever recognizable hits from the 70's he does several really good blues numbers. Bad news everyone (actually good news) there is more to come as he is making a new album of nothing but Blues and Classic R&B. My interest hasx ceratinly been peaked and will be looking out for it in the future (which I will not be flying into).
