Robert Cray CD Preview

Posted by Dan | Labels: | Posted On Jul 28, 2009 at 9:43 PM

I usually don't like borrowing stuff that is making the rounds on the other blues blogs but in this case I'll make an exception. Robert Cray deserves exceptions doesn't he?

Robert Cray's This TimeFans of Robert Cray's unique style of guitar-driven soul-blues can prepare for a trip down to their favorite local purveyor of fine blues music! August 11, 2009 is the date set for the release of Cray's first studio album in four years. Titled This Time, the nine-track CD will be released by Cray's own Nozzle Records and distributed by notable folk and blues label Vanguard Records.

This Time was recorded at Santa Barbara Sound Design in Santa Barbara, California with Cray sitting behind the board himself to produce the album. Cray has shuffled his band roster somewhat since the release of Twenty, his 2005 album, bring his old friend and former bandmember, bassist Richard Cousins, on board along with veteran blues drummer Tony Braunagel to join long-time Cray keyboardist Jim Pugh for this recording. Johnny Winter "The Woodstock Experience"

Posted by Dan | | Posted On Jul 27, 2009 at 9:49 PM

I like Johnny Winter. His first album was the first album I ever reviewed, but alas his fall has been so tragic. From first hand accounts I've gathered from others the man that I listen to isn't the man who plays anymore.

But we can still hear him the way he was with the new Woodstock Experience box sets from Sony. They've got one for Johnny and an equally interesting one for Santana.

Hit the link below for a great write up on both the disc set and a little woodstock history.

At the time, the Texas blues guitarist was primarily known for two things -- being an albino, and the fairly strong buzz he had been generating largely via word of mouth from music critics and scenesters. Johnny Winter of course eventually went on to ...

Tommy Castro's Upcoming CD "Hard Believer"

Tommy CastroTommy Castro via last.fm

Regardless of the time I saw him with the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue (which I didn't really enjoy, I blame Magic Dick) if there is one name that all the old guys I see at concerts recommend the most it is Tommy Castro. If I had a nickel for ever time Tommy Castro has been recommended to me I have a handful of nickels, which is only nickels I would have seeing as how people don't recommend me enough people.

Anyways Tommy Castro has got a new CD coming out August 11 called "Hard Believer", but unless Alligator Records sends me a copy (unlikely) I can't get it because I will have been bled dry by textbook prices. Those with money should probably pick it up though.

Oh and a word to Modern Guitars Magazine. I didn't post the entire article this time, go be an ass to someone else now.

Gibson Artist Elvin Bishop On Chicago Blues and His Gibson ES-345

One thing I just can't stand is the Gibson guitar company (and their guitars okay so that's two things). Here they've got a great interview with Elvin Bishop talking about what it was like to be a white blues fan in 1960s Chicago but after the halfway mark it turns into an advertisement for Gibson's own products.

It's one thing to have people hype your guitars but to do it yourself in an your own article is pretty pathetic.

The post is brought to you by my love of Fender Guitars, if it's not a Fender it's not a guitar.

While the likes of Bishop, Butterfield, and Bloomfield were frequenting blues clubs, they weren't the only ones interested in the music. Across the Atlantic Ocean, a crop of young British guitarists were seeking out blues albums—and they were listening ...

Happy Forth of July

Hey so I know it's not the forth yet but since I'll be somewhere in the mountains of western Virgina I doubt I'll be able to update. It's a five hour drive there, but you know what? I get to see this guy....

I don't know how it happened but for as long as I can remember the accordion makes me happy every time I hear one.
